Video Codec Names - Can I change them?

Hi All! When I choose to 'Render As' and then I choose a file type, lets say .avi. I can then click on 'custom' and choose my video and audio codecs from a drop down list. But these lists are really messy, is there any way to clean them up or retype the names of them so I know what codecs are which? Does anyone know where this file lives?

You can't rename the codecs, or at least not easily (everything is hackable, but that's also risky). You can always save presets and recall a particular render setting-
