I have used the Canopus ADVC-1394 as I didn't have a separate firewire card. I still use it's IEEE 1394 input and it works great. However the ADVC-100 will output analog and DV while the ADVC-1394 out puts only DV. I don't have any expierience with the Sony product you speak of either.

I have the SONY unit and it works like a charm. I've never had a speck of trouble with it. However, the Canopus unit has a few features that the SONY lacks, including PAL support. If i had it to do over again i'd probably go with the Canopus, especially if you can find it cheaper.

You'll find that the Canopus is a great unit, better than the Sony only because the Sony is older, and the Canopus uses the Canopus codec which is cleaner at conversion, IMO. We tested these pretty thoroughly for a review.
Truth is, the ADS is cheapest, but most accurate, but the marginally increased luminance of the Canopus makes it look better.
