Video effects causing lag when not being previewed

EDIT: Essentially, is there a way to stop a displacement map from affecting an entire track?

I'm probably doing something really wrong and the answer is staring me in the face, but that's why i'm here. I've used a parent composition layer to create a displacement map to apply the glitch effect to the text layer it's paired with and all looks fine. It lags a bit while previewing but i expect that. But the part that bugs me is that it still lags long after that effect/text has ended and disappeared. Is there a way to stop the displacement map after it's been used? I had hoped that the composition envelope would be the answer, but it isn't.

Just a quick note, hardware acceleration is enabled, i have a 1070 and can normally watch the live preview with the "Best (full)" settings. But while the composition layer is active, i can't even manage a stable 30fps with the preview window set to "preview (half)".

Are you applying the effect to the event (or clip, as you call it) or to the track? If to the event, it is finished once the event is finished. If to the track, it is really never finished.

I've applied it to the track since i haven't found out how to add a displacement map to an individual "event". I was hoping someone could help teach me how to do that or tell me how to stop it effecting the whole track after a certain point (which is what i thought the composition envelope would do)

Well, I imagine someone will help teach you that, though it won’t be me because I have never used a displacement map. But we do have a variety of Vegas users here.

Using the wrong envelope type... needed the mute one...
