video file metadata

Is there any way to access data such as date and time a clip was recorded?

When I was using my PD150 in SD I could access this information from the explorer window of Vegas by choosing detailed view, right clicking the file and choosing properties. This does not seem to work with the high definition footage I am getting from my HVR V1. The window comes up, but it only has information on clip length and when the file was accessed and modified, but not recorded. Is this a camera setting thing, an HDV thing or a Sony Vegas setting thing?

I do a lot of recording of animal behaviour and having the time stamp on the clips themselves ruin the clips permanently for anything else, so I used to rely on the metadata to get important time information.

Good question, and one I have wondered myself. I guess I assumed that you would have to enter this information when you captured the video, but am not entirely sure. But I am glad you asked, as someone here is bound to know.

I use a Z1 and to "capture" its HDV files (m2t) I use the free HDVSplit. It has the option to add date & time etc. to the filename. Its documentation says it supports Sony HDR-HC1, Sony HVR-A1, Sony HDR-FX1 but clearly does others as well.
