Video from Canon SD500 not recognized?

I've tried to place video from a Canon SD500 camera on the timeline, but Vegas 6 (and 5) only recognizes the audio portion of the file. The file comes out of the camera as an .avi file.

The SD500 is a very small 7.1 megapixel digital camera with a video mode.

I can play the file in Windows Media Player with no problems, and it seems to work fine in Final Cut Express (which isn't nearly as versatile as Vegas in accepting various file formats).

Has anyone had a similar experience or know how to get around this problem?

Thanks.

This question comes up like clockwork every couple of weeks.

The Canon SD500 (and a bunch of other digital still cameras) use "Motion JPEG" as it's video compression codec. You can get an MJPEG codec from www.morgan-multimedia.com or www.mainconcept.com

Thanks much.

I did do a search on the forum on "Canon" and SD500, but couldn't find anything with those keywords.
