“Video FX/Border/Bevel” plugin not working properly in Vegas 18 & 19

Debbie-Whitmer wrote on 9/13/2021, 9:59 AM

9-13-2021 - Hi there. There is a way-over-due bug-fix that needs to be done in Vegas 18 AND Vegas 19 (and even after the most recent major update in Vegas 19).  And it’s regarding the “Video FX/Border/Bevel” plugin that comes with Vegas Pro.  I have been using Vegas for years and I have been using this particular plugin for years, every single week in my video projects and, even though I purchased Vegas 18 and Vegas 19, I still use Vegas 17 because 18 and 19 were not performing as they should.  Here is the problem with the aforementioned plugin, and I left a screen shot so you can clearly see it.

When you Bevel something, the bevel part around the edges should be as solid as the object you’re beveling as shown in my example for Vegas 17 which is displaying it correctly.  But as you can see with both Vegas Pro 18 and Vegas Pro 19, the beveling is now “glowing” around the edges plus it’s transparent.  This is unacceptable and this needs to be fixed ASAP.  I do post production for a radio broadcast and the radio host is sitting behind this logo and you can see through the logo in the beveling part around the edges which should not be so. Therefore, I cannot use “Bevel” in Vegas Pro 18 and in Vegas Pro 19.  PLEASE fix this ASAP.  It would be so greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

My computer system is: AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 12-Core Processor 4.00 GHz, 64.0 GB installed RAM, 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor, Windows 10 Pro version 21H1 installed on 7-10-2021 (and it's up to date) OS build 19043.1165

Hello Grazie - Thank you for your reply. I'm not sure what you mean by "Can't repro". Also, what version of Vegas Pro are you using? And, you must have a background behind the picture when testing to see if the background is showing through in which it should not. I used a blue background behind my logo so it could be seen that the blue was showing through because the beveling is transparent in which it should not be. Thank you.

Grazie - I forgot to mention that you cannot use a black background as it will appear okay. The Black color causes it to look okay and is "hiding the glow and transparency" but I cannot use a black background in a real setting with this logo. Use another color for your background to do a test. And I'm not sure which version of Vegas Pro you are using. Thank you.

I also use the Vegas "bevel" plugin for pictures as well but I cannot do it now with Vegas Pro 18 AND Vegas Pro 19 because the beveling is "glowing" around the edges plus the edges are also transparent in which it should not be.

Just to clarify, also, remember, a logo does NOT take up an entire screen (like a picture would) because, in my case, it would completely cover the radio host! The logo is a real setting is reduced in size and is in the lower left-hand corner of the screen just like a "fox news" logo or any news-outlet logo and then you see the people behind the logo speaking. I must have a solid logo when it's reduced at any size using the Vegas Pro bevel plugin and I cannot use "black" behind this logo. The bevel plugin in Vegas Pro 18 and Vegas Pro 19 simply does not work for me as it used to in Vegas 17 and before.

We are looking into this. This plugin was rewritten as an OFX effect for VP 18. An error may have been introduced in the process of converting it.

Hello Grazie - Thank you for your reply. I'm not sure what you mean by "Can't repro".

Shorthand for "can't reproduce."

Also, what version of Vegas Pro are you using?

VP19 B361.

And, you must have a background behind the picture when testing to see if the background is showing through in which it should not.

Yup, I agree, that's why I placed the Chequers to confirm.

I used a blue background behind my logo so it could be seen that the blue was showing through because the beveling is transparent in which it should not be. Thank you.

Have you got the Border FX BEFORE the Pan/Crop or AFTER the Pan/Crop in the Chain?

I've reduced the Piccie to see the Bevel is showing correctly. It's not Transparent:

Hi Grazie. When I created this logo, I did not use the Pan/Crop feature at all. I use "Track Motion" to reduce its size. The the Bevel plugin can only be put on top of the logo or picture that you are using it with. It's such a simple procedure. As you know, you get a picture (or logo in my case), and put it in a track, then drag the bevel plugin on top of the picture/logo, adjust the size of the bevel you want and it's automatically done. That it. Then I used Track Motion to reduce the size. It works perfectly in Vegas 17 (and before that) FOR ME but everything changed when I got Vegas Pro 18 and Vegas Pro 19. It simply does not function properly FOR ME like it always used to.

O..K.. So, you're applying Border Fx at Track Level and using the Bevel. You're then changing the size of the Event/Logo using Track Motion. Yes? I didn't know that's that what you were doing. 've followed your instructions, but I'm still not getting a problem:

H Grazie and all - Attached here is the actual radio broadcast that I do. You can see clearly the difference with beveling in Vegas Pro 17 (which does it correctly) and Vegas Pro 19 (and it does not do it correctly in Vegas Pro 18 as well). If it's working for you, I am very happy for you . But it's not working for me as you can plainly see. As VEGASDerek has said, they are looking into it and there could be a problem (see his note). But thank you for helping and testing it out.

Now I do.

@Grazie - Okay, guess what? In case anyone else is having the same problem, I found a different but much longer way to make this work in Vegas 18 and 19 FOR ME but it takes about 6 extra steps to do it whereas before, all I had to do was drag and drop the bevel onto the track where my logo was and it always worked automatically. What I discovered was that I did not realize/know that you could add FX effects directly from the Project Media tab. So within the Project Media tab where my logo is stored:

(1) right click my graphic logo (or picture whatever the case may be), then choose
(2) Media FX in the drop down menu,
(3) choose VEGAS Border,
(4) ADD
(5) OK
(6) in the preset drop down menu, choose Bevel and it works!! Then exit out of the beveled dialog box.

I can't believe it! However, again, the drag and drop method directly from the Video FX tab which was so much easier does not work for me anymore using Vegas 18 & 19. But when there is a will, there's a way! I'm still glad that they are looking into this. Thank you again!

Yes, we can add/apply FXs at the Media Level. So, any place you put that Media it will have, in this case, a Border around it.

We can add FXs at:

Event Level

Media Level

Track Level

Project Level

I’m very happy you’ve found a Vegas Pro solution for your work. Better yet, you came back here to share your results with the Community.

@VEGASDerek - Hello again. I see. However, I would ask you to think about and please reconsider sending out a bug-fix for this "beveled" issue for Vegas 18 because there may be those, because of the Pandemic, who cannot afford to buy Vegas 19 and therefore, are "stuck" with a known bug in Vegas 18 that can be remedied. Also, it's also a thing of integrity when customers put confidence in the company who produces the Vegas Pro software and wish to share their excellence in making things right for the customers and a willingness for customers to recommend your software to others. Just a thought. Thank you so much for your help.
