Video fx has stopped working

Part way through editing a project in Vegas Pro 12, changes that I try to make to brightness, colour balance, sharpness etc. are no longer occurring. Obviously some setting has accidentally been changed. Can anyone please help on how to fix this?

you haven't clicked preview window or track fx off / bypass by any chance?

Maybe I have done this inadvertently, but exactly how and where can I check and change these settings?
When I click on Tools/Video/Video Track FX, a message says No plug-ins in chain.
When I try to Add FX, the Add FX button is greyed out and so cannot be used.
