When selecting a video fx how do you specify a particular section of the movie. When I select a video fx it applies it to the whole file. Their must be a way of applying it to a specific section of a movie file. help urgently please!
Really simple solution is to use the S key to split the large event at the point where you want the effect to start and again where you want it to end. Now apply the effect to just that small piece.
Better solution (in most cases) is to use keyframes. You can use the little miniature timeline at the bottom of the effect's window to specify points where the effect should change. Set the effect's parameters to zero at the beginning, right-mouse-button click on that keyframe and choose "hold". Add a keyframe where you want it to start and adjust the parameters to what you want. Also set this one to "hold". Add another keyframe where you want it to end and set the parameters back to zero.
You can add as many keyframes as you like, each with different settings. If you use one of the other keyframe types besides "hold" you can have the effect gradually change over time.
How is it that you are applying the video FX? If you are applying it to an entire track in the timeline (such as by clicking the little icon at the left of the track), then it will apply to the entire track. If you want to apply a video FX to a single clip (video event), then click the little icon at the right edge of the clip in the timeline that you want to apply the effect to.
thanks for the replies but the split method is not very flexible (changing the length of the FX is too clunky and the keyframe method is far too cumbersome. Why not do what AVS and NERO do, have a seperate timeline where you drop the FX into then you can edit the length of the effect easily.
If you don't want it applied to the entire timeline then just apply it to one clip. If you only want it to apply to part of a clip then you'll have to do some extra "work" .. like splitting or keyframes.
Johnnyboy, when you add an effect to an event, it opens up the effect dialog that DOES have a separate timeline. You can then add keyframes on that timeline to control how much or little it affects that clip at any given point in time.
I think you'd be happier, though, using the split method as described. You can still use keyframes to slowly let it take effect but the effect won't need to be on the entire clip that way.
