video FX not working

I am working on an animation in layers. I was hoping to use a keyer to make some sections "transparent", but for some reason it just has no effect on the avi files' green sections (forgive my clumsy English)... I have applied the chroma keyer at both the clip, and track levels with no joy ... in fact all effects seem to be having no result at all....
I suspect I have to turn something on in the preferences, but for the life of me can't find the "on" button.
Please can anyone out there point me in the right direction?

Above the preview window is a split screen button (4th button from the left) that has an FX Bypass switch in its dropdown menu. You probably enabled this. Just turn it off.

First thing is to check you haven't BYPASSED the FX in your Preview Window. The button is located on the Preview Tool Bar. G
