I don't know of a way.
You can lay down markers (m) on the timeline to the beat, then click on each marker while your event fx window stays open. Use presets or leapfrog right click drag the keyframes in the fx timeline. Sync to cursor feature must be activated in fx window for either to work.

thats some good advice, but wouldn't this be a great feature for VV4! you can use sound as a source for any parameter in 3dsmax which can make for some creative animation possibilities. you can even generate sound files just for that purpose with Sound Forge...

Yes, automatic anything is good. Short clips are a breeze with the manual way I mentioned. I have a program called Magix: Music Video Maker. The deluxe version offers both beat based and scan envelope (volume) rhythmic envelopes. Also has audio filter keyframes. Droool.
I do have analog surround files from this program. Too cool to mix thru my dolby analog reciever.
