Video FX won't show

I just downloaded the trial version of Vegas 5 (and so far I really like it. I have Acid 4 and SoundForge XP Studio 5 and it works similar). I have been trying to get the light rays effect to work and nothing ends up in the video (no effect works). Is this disabled in the trial version, or am I missing something? My guess is I'm missing something.

I thought that might be something. However, when I tried to use an MPEG-4 codec, that's when I got the 'you need to register it to use this' window.

Make sure you haven't got FX bypassed checked on the Preview drop down above the Preview Screen

It was checked. It took me a while of button pushing to get it so I could see the whole thing. Select right...select left...select all...then I did something and now I can see the whole thing.
