Video hesitates every two seconds in preview

I have used Videofactory for the past two years. I currently have version 2.0c. It works great on my old Micron 450 MHz Pentium desktop, and I also briefly used it on my 700 MHz Presario 1800T laptop. Both computers use Win 98SE.

However, in anticipation of getting a new desktop PC that uses Windows XP, I briefly installed VideoFactory on my fathers brand new Dell Inspiron 8200 (which uses Windows XP). Unfortunately, I have been unable to get the video preview to play smoothly. About every two seconds, the video hesitates and then resumes. The audio seems to play O.K.

To troubleshoot, I tried playing the video in the little movie application that comes with the computer (Moviemaker). It plays fine. I then tried using MSCONFIG to disable all the functions that load when the computer boots. This made no difference. I then disabled all the processes that are running (using MSCONFIG). This made no difference. I tried giving VideoFactory a higher priority. No difference. I copied the same clips to my Presario 1800T laptop and played them on VideoFactory, and they played just fine.

I vaguely remember reading about problems with Windows XP, but I can't find anything using the search function in this forum. Is there some incompatibility with XP, or some other problem that I am overlooking? The Dell Inspiron 8200 computer is obviously more than capable: It is only two days old, factory fresh, and three to ten times faster than the two computers on which I've run VideoFactory before.

Any ideas that I should try?

Thanks.

John

Hi John
If I was you I would install win 98se in the new comp, rather than wasting time trying to figure out what is wrong with XP. If you really need to use XP, create another partition and install it on that, after installing 98se. then you can duel boot and use 98se for video editing, and XP for all your other stuff.

Sorry I cant be more help, but first versions of windows always seem a bit flaky, untill the service packs come out, thats why few people have any hassle with 98se.

Personnaly I duel boot win 98se and win 2000 with sp2. 98 for games, e-mail, surfing ect and 2000 exclusively for Video factory

Installing an older O/S is really not an option. I'm sure XP can work, especially since the built-in applications (Moviemaker, Media Player, and WinDVD) play the video just fine. There is definitely something unique to the VideoFactory/XP interface that is causing this to happen. I have also tried playing with the Sonic Foundry DV encoder enabled, and with it disabled. This has made a difference on other systems, but not here.

Any other ideas out there?

Thanks.

Win XP service pack 1 is available now. I suggest that may be the first thing to try.

Good luck.

I have experienced this type of problem in other NLE applications, but not with VF2.0c.... After spending $19.95 with Microsoft and their support guy for Windows XP ,,,, I ,,,, let me repeat myself,,, I figued out that the network bridge was interupting the IRQ9 ,,,,, disabling ALL of the network devices before rendering or outputting to the camcorder fixed the problem ,,,, (Microsoft had no clue that this was happening)

Cococoop,

Yours is a very useful suggestion. Thanks! I've already uninstalled VF because I'm leaving tomorrow and didn't want to leave it on this laptop. However, I may re-install, unplug the network, and try again just before I leave. It HAS to be something like this, because I can watch the little preview window on my desktop and laptop, with no glitches whatsoever, and they are 20-30% of the horsepower of this new Dell.

Well, following the idea given by cococoop, I re-installed, disabled networking, and tried again. Unfortunately, the video on the computer screen preview still jerks about every 1-2 seconds.

I've been very happy with Videofactory and was about to buy a $5,000 setup, complete with the upgrade to Vegas. However, since VF didn't work on this test machine, those plans are on hold. I obviously cannot justify that kind of expenditure without some hard answers as to why VF works fine on 400-700 MHz machines running Win98SE, but fails on a 1.6 GHz machine running XP, even with all of XP's startup processes disabled. The video runs fine in the Dell Moviemaker, in WinDVD, and in Media Player (and in much larger windows). It's definitely something in the interaction between VF and XP.

I've uninstalled VF from the test machine, and am leaving tomorrow to go home (2,000 miles away), so that's the end of my ability to test.

I'm cheering myself up by thinking of all the other wonderful things I'm going to be able to buy now that I have $5,000 burning a hole in my pocket.

I'd give miketree's advice a shot, it may fix a few incompatabilities on xp. But if you're not b/b it might be worth getting the service pack on disc. I've heard it takes 30mins+ to download on b/b.

Tried the XP Service pack, but it didn't make any difference. I'm back home now and can't go any further with this. My only conclusion is that Videofactory doesn't work with the Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop running Windows XP Professional, but I can't say why.
