Video + Multitrack Audio

Cross posted from the video forum, hope that is OK...

This Q is right up Spot's alley and anyone else who does remote live recording...I am being asked to video a concert by a local band. They have a local studio that they work with on demos and such, but if they don't or can't use them then I may also be asked to record the multitrack audio which I would rather not do, but I do have some exp. with it.

My question is, the equipment I will have available to do this is a 5+ year old Layla - I think it was Event at the time - and a 2 year old Layla, definitely Echo. Will I be able to sync those two units together under Vegas for 16 track recording?

Part two of the question - If I want to test this setup at home in Vegas, do I need to feed all 16 tracks with signal or can I just have the devices online and record 16 empty channels? I want to do this to test my hard drives and PC before committing to the event.

thanks!
David

if all channels are armed and recording they will be pushing data onto your disk at the full rate - the value of the data doesn't matter.

Still it might be worth doing a quick test with audio on one channel. I've had a snaffu causing the audio to be badly distorted due to a driver mixup.

Thanks Bob, and I agree. I can test 2 - 4 channels at a time with audio, and will run the remaining 12 open, and just run the whole thing for an hour or so. Assuming my rig will handle that many channels at once. That would also be a good thing to know.....

It sounds like you have a Layla 20 and a Layla 24. I'm not sure whether these will sync properly as there may be some driver issues? Obviously you'll want to test this thoroughly. You could also check with Echo but they've been a bit slow with their email support response recently. You might have better luck calling them directly.
