Video newbie

I am trying to convert a .AVI file to .MPEG2 (for use with DVD Architect) but while the convertion seems to go well I just can't get any sound!!!! can someone direct me to a page or guide me through how to do so?
The .avi file got sound but not the mpeg file.

I use DVD PAL template as I want the file to be played on pal system
