video output file to large in MB

i take a original video, a clip from a movie, i open it in vegas video and edit it a BIT save it as NTSC or DIVX and its HUGE!!!!
wayy to big
why does it do this!!!

"When rendering out files to .avi (Video For Windows) the default setting is to render out the file uncompressed. This results in a very large file. You can effectively reduce the size of the file by selecting one of the options under the template drop down menu or by clicking on the custom > video tab > and for video format choosing one of the compression codecs that are listed in the drop down menu. Once you have selected one of the codecs that are on your click OK and then save. Different codecs will result in different quality files. For a smaller file size with a good resolution try selecting the NTSC DV template from the render as dialogue box."

I did that, i render a 30 mb original size file, its comes out around 500MB .avi file
what shood i try now???

What are your settings? If you are using the AVI setting called " Default Tempate (uncompressed) " - then your files will be huge (10 times the size). You need to use the tempalete : NTSC DV

The uncompressed template will not improve your DV footage captured on your system- you cannot improve the picture from its native format. In other words, you cannot make VHS as good as 601 uncompressed video- it can never be any betyter than the original VHS...make sense? So don't use the uncompressed tempalte unless you are bringing in uncompressed files like Targa, QT uncompressed movies or something along that line....

OK, when you go to render as, you select avi (or whatever type file) & then click on the custom button. You'll see a dialog box with several tabs, & under video it has quite a few options including the method of compression. Choose one of those.

The choices available will depend on what you've got installed, as most come outside of Vegas itself.

before i posted this i already tried all TYPES of TEMPLATES
like NTSC DV etc, still HUGE file, and the movie originally is XVID codec, i took it and cut out a part, and saved the segment as DIVX, so its DIVX when i open it in vegas video

Matt... all video files are HUGE. How big is relative to the file format. Obviously if you start out with a 30MB file and see it grow to 500MB you may be surprised.

How are you going to play the rendered file once you're done editing it?

If you want to make a DVD, then you're stuck with using the MPEG-2 file type and one of the DV templates. That will make a big file. If you render out to AVI, especially uncompressed AVI, that format will for sure be really big.

If you're just going to play off your computer, there are many formats you can pick. A popular one is Windows Media (.WMV) just remember to bump up the template from the default low bitrate to 512 or 1 MBPS for decent playback quality. Or try the same thing using the Real Media (.RM) file format. Again, bump up the bitrate.

While you can make Div-X, why would you want to to when you can get better quailty while still getting good compression. Visit Chienwork's site (get the link from my site below) and see some of the demo videos many of us have done using low bitrate WMV and see if you like the file format. Just bump up the bitrate higher and you'll get much better quality and still relatively small file sizes.

I saved a WMV9 from a 30mb divx file, its around 28 mb its about 5mins long
on that site u listed billyboy some guy made a vid, the black and white one with roller bladers in it, and its around 5min and its like 9mb, and its good quality, how did he do that?

Yeah...that's the compression I"m looking for.

I'm doing an 8 min vid and I need it to be a decent quality, but I'm only getting somewhere in the 60 mb range. I did do a okay looking Real Meadia (at about 5 mb), but I'm trying to do it a notch higher and it's coming out HUGE!!

You referring to Kelly's (Chienwork's) site? Most people that post Vegas samples to his site do so at lower bitrates, usually 512 or lower using the Windows Media Video (.wmv) file type. If you want to see if the quality is good enough for you just select .wmv as file type and try different bitrates. It all depends what you are going to end up doing with the finished file. If its just for viewing off your computer, then wmv is fine. If however you want to burn it to a DVD you got to use MPEG-2 and one of the DV templates. The difference in file sizes is due to quality. If you aren't too concerned with quality you may want to try burning to a CD using SVCD or even VCD (select mpeg-1 as the file type). It really depends what's more important to you, file size or quality.

I lowered the rate to 512 and also dropped the audio some. File turned out a decent size to put on my website (aroun 8 meg). I was a little disappointed with some of the audio, but that's not too much of a biggie.

So a good WMV at 512 was 8+ mb (hey, that rhymed!!)
