Video Playback - I need help ASAP...

I am running Vegas 3.0 on an XP Pro machine with 933, 768 MB RDRAM and 2 7200RPM IDE drives which are fat32. I can't seem to get smooth playback in Vegas on any quality level of the video display. Best just seems to play every 15 frames or so and draft seems to jump and jitter so much that i can't tell if my edits are on the beat. My other problem is than when I render a DV file it also pl;ays back funky and sometimes it has scan lines in it but most or all of the time it just plays back with jitters and jumps. Can someone help me?

Thanks...

Kevin

Hi Kevin,

You might try prerendering or ram-rendering small segments to see if they play smoothly at the preview quality (don't forget to set the prerender files to your video drives in project settings). If they don't you might need to go back a step and see if a Vegas-captured DV clip plays smoothly:

If an unmodified Vegas-captured DV clip does not play smoothly in the timeline, refer to the SoFo optimization recommendations for your PC. (IRQs, DMA, background apps, etc.)

Make sure your project settings match the imported file. for instance, it you shot in 16X9, make sure you've chosen the widescreen format for the project. It you chose regular NTSC-DV you will see a representation of your widescreen as it will appear (with the black bars), but it will slow down rendering and display time considerably, since each frame will have to be interpreted from widescreen to 4X3.

Also, try prerendering transitions if they look too jerky. I use a 650mhz laptop and find viewing it full-size in draft no problem, but occasionally I render a short transition.

Check under "project properties...video...advanced" and make sure motion blur and deinterlace are set to "none". I had playback problems when I first installed Vegas and this cleared it up.

Having the 1394 card by itself on its own IRQ is most important.
