Did you happen to install sp2 at or the same time you installed VV5?

SP2 = MicroSoft Windows "S"ervice "P"ack "2".

It's their latest incarnation of Windows with many changes. A lot of software programs are not quite ready for it and have some problems. However, as far as I know, Vegas runs fine on it.

Check the Canopus site, I think they MAY have a fix for SP2 issues.
Although maybe it was only with PP, after all there's no special software loaded for the ADVC-100 with Vegas.

Thanks..
I was reading about Service Pack 2 and wondering what it would do
to computers that are "happy."
I think I will wait with the windows upgrade and do a fresh install of
Vegas 5, also check the upgrades for the Canopus system.

If you have installed Windows XP SP2, this could be the culprit. Before proceeding any further, check the Canopus with both Vegas 4 and Vegas 5 on the same machine (V4 and V5 don't conflict, you can use trials of either if you wish). If the Canopus works with Vegas 4 but not with Vegas 5, then the problem is something else, but if both no longer work, and you are reasonably computer savvy/adventurous, read on:

My recent experience:

I have two machines with SP2, and I just discovered one of them works with my DSR1500a AND my PDX10 and the other ONLY works with the PDX10.

I have spent quite a bit of time trying to figure this out and eventually got it after much fiddling. Here's what Microsoft is currently advising (yes its a hassle but its better than a complete OS rollback):

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/newsgroups/reader.mspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsxp.moviemaker&tid=76b359b0-c742-41db-9f16-86299cace816

Steps:

"MS has the bug marked for a Hotfix, but there's no ETA on when it will be
released.

In the mean time, if you're feeling adventurous, you can try to roll-back to
the old MSDV.sys file.
Be forewarned that this isn't a "supported" workaround, and you are
encouraged to back up your system before proceeding! These steps assume that
you have a machine that has been upgraded from a previous version of XP to
XPSP2 -- If you have a PC with an OEM install of XPSP2, you'll need to find
a friend with the old copy of MSDV.SYS.

Here's what to do:
1. Attach your [DV device] to your PC.

2. Uninstall your [DV device] drivers as they currently exist:
a. Choose "Start" | "Control Panel" | "System" | "Hardware" Tab |"Device
Manager"
b. Go to "Imaging Devices" | "[DV device]" and right-click; choose
"Uninstall"
c. On the "Confirm Device removal" dialog, choose "OK"
d. DISCONNECT your camera from your PC!!!

3. Now, we need to roll-back your MSDV.SYS file:
a. Reboot your PC into "Safe mode" and log in as the Administrator
account. (You can choose "Safe mode" by hitting the "F8" key during your
PC's boot sequence.)
b. Launch Explorer and navigate to Windows\Driver Cache\i386
b1.Right-click on the "driver.cab" file, and choose "Explore"
b2. Find the old "MSDV.SYS" file (it should have version number
earlier than 5.3.2600.2180). Right-click, and choose copy.
b3. Paste the old MSDV.SYS file into the following directories:
Windows\system32\drivers Windows\system32\dllcache Windows\LastGood\System32\Drivers
b4. Navigate to Windows\Driver Cache\i386. Find the SP2.CAB and
rename it.
b5. Reboot your PC normally.

4. Once your PC is rebooted, and you've logged in, re-attach your DV camera
to your PC and confirm that the device enumerates in the control panel. If
you've done everything right, you should be able to check the version number
on MSDV.sys via the Control Panel driver details.

Whew! Hope this helps!
