Video Preview Window Disappeared!! (VV3)

RixWare wrote on 9/17/2003, 12:24 PM
I tried to move the video preview window off the docking bar for a moment, and it completely disappeared! I tried unchecking and rechecking the entry on the View menu, but it still doesn't come back. I think it got moved off the screen, but I have no idea how to get it back (I tried greater screen resolutions, but no luck).

Does anybody know of a way to reset the window docking settings? Or how about moving a window that isn't visible?

Thanks!

I believe there is a way to reset Vegas to its default settings. You may want to try that.

Not at my machine right now, so I can't try it.

Try resizing or closing the other windows that are open.

Atl+6 =unhide video preview.

ctrl+shift+restart Vegas resets everything to factory defaults if you get totally lost.

Alt+6 does toggle the check mark on the menu, but the preview window does not reappear.

I'm hesitant to reset everything to the factory defaults, because I've done quite a bit of customization. I will use that only as an absolute last resort.

Is there a key combination which will let me move the window with the arrow keys until it becomes visible again? Is there a registry key or INI file which contains the coordinates of the various windows which I could edit?

Just hunt around for a bit- the preview window might be off screen, or hidden behind another docked window.

I've been hunting for about an hour now, including undocking everything, then unchecking everything from the View menu (so none of the dockable windows are shown).

Here's how it happened: I grabbed the video preview pane to undock it to get a bigger picture. The outline of the window appeared as usual and I dragged it off the docking bar and dropped it. But when I let go, it simply vanished.

When I toggle using Alt+6, the main window loses focus, as if the sub-window has the focus, but I can't see it anywhere.

Change the resolution of your monitor to a higher resolution, find the wayward window and drag it back to the main area, then set the resolution back.

jetdv,

Thanks, but that was one of the first things I tried. I went all the way to my monitor's max resolution, but the window was not found. That makes me suspect that it's actually off the top or left of the screen (with coords set somehow to negative numbers).

My window has been found!

Here are the steps I used to solve this:

1. Uncheck and then recheck the Video Preview item on the View menu. (The main window lost focus, meaning the hidden window received the focus.)

2. Hold Alt+Spacebar to get the window control menu. (This is a standard Windows keyboard shortcut, which works even with toolbar windows which do not appear to have control boxes. The control menu appeared as a disembodied menu, unattached to anything else.)

3. Select Move from the menu.

4. Use the arrow keys to move the window outline until fully visible. Hit Enter and the window will reappear.

I have set the Windows taskbar at the top of my screen, and I had tried moving it around, but that did nothing. The Video Preview window appears to have assumed the same shape as the taskbar, and was moving around with it -- hidden underneath. When I tried the above steps, it emerged and I was able to resize it and place it back where I wanted it.

I have NO IDEA what caused this.

Thanks for all the help!

Yeah. It worked for me.
Only wasted 1 hour so far!
