Video Quality

djanmb wrote on 8/22/2004, 12:00 PM
I would like to know if decoding video from AVI to MPEG-2 using TMPGENC is any better than using MS or even MYDVD. I've seen a lot of people use TMPGENC to decode. I downloaded the trial version of of 2.5 and tested it using the Best Quality option, but didn't notice much of a difference then when I did it with MS.

I haven't used Tmpegenc, but Screenblast uses the Main Concept encoder, one of the top rated encoders at the consumer level. Last night it took 8 hours to encode a 1-hour video with lots of effects, titles, transitions, and added sounds. And that's on a machine with minimal requirements--256 m ram, 1 gig Pentium 3. Quality is "very good".
