video render for web settings

Hi folks,
Thought maybe I'd catch some new opinions on this. Just using the out-of-the-box VV render capabilities, what settings do you suggest for rendering for web playback? Need a level of detail that will make faces fairly clear and recognizable.

Also, does it matter what size you render to? 176x144 etc. I mean does the ratio of those dimensions matter?

Please let me know what works best for you. I have no preference on format (wmv, avi, rm, etc).

Thanks!
Jeff

Jeff,
I use the Windows Media Player 9 format and change the bits to 256K. This format streams well and is still pretty good quality. If you want better quality, up it to 512K but the file size increases. There are some samples on my home web site at this location:

Select sample videos and click the name. Hope this helps.

The ratio matters significantly due to 8 bit info....keep that in mind.
320 x 240 is a standard size. If you can't make *most* vid look great at a stream of 250k, then you are doing something significantly wrong. We generally get VHS quality or better at 512, full screen in WM9. There are a couple tutorials on this on the Sundance site.

You can browse through all the videos submitted at vegasusers.com/vidshare. There are examples at bitrates from 80Kbps up through 4Mbps so you can see what the different rates look like. For WMV, enabling two-pass encoding will give a substantially better image in a slightly smaller file size.
