You have to choose a template that isn't widescreen. What format and template are you choosing? It also helps if you set your project up for 4:3 instead of widescreen too.

If your source is wide screen then you have to decide how to fit it in the 4:3 frame. You can crop off the sides or stretch it taller or reduce it to fit leaving black bars above and below. You can also use any combination of all three methods or whatever fits your needs best.

Hi, I am using the custom template:

Custom (720x576, 25.000 fps)
Video: 25.000 fps, 720x576, Quality VBR 90, WMV V11 Compression.

What setting is the right one?

You've left out one detail, the pixel aspect ratio.

Both widescreen (16:9) and 4:3 use 720x576. Widescreen uses fatter pixels with a PAR something like 1.4, while 4:3 uses a PAR around 1.1. You haven't told us which PAR your template is using.
