video skipping

I am using AVCHD and while editing, the video skips, also when veiwing the raw vidoe but not as much. can anyone help me with this....Im a total novice

it's a brand new Dell1721 laptop running Vista with 2GB of ram and a AMD processor

Make sure the project properties are set properly to represent your footage. If that's not correct, you will be losing in performance.
