Video Stalls

I am running Vegas 4 on Windows 2000 Professional with Maxtor 7200 RMP Hard drive. I am playing the video from the timeline and suddenly it stalls for a good few seconds before playing again. This happens all the time. I used another video editing software and it seems to be running smooth. But I prefer to use Vegas! So any help from any of you would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Sounds like you've got a resource share. Is the drive in DMA mode? Or rather, is the controller in DMA mode?
Is it stalling from the timeline, or from the Trimmer and Explorer?

Thanks for responding. It stalls from timeline as well as from the trimmer. I'm not sure how to check if my drive is in DMA mode. May be you could assist. Thanks.

Assuming that Maxtor drive is an external one (is it?).....

I am sure this is the age-old problem of stalling related to the Firewire dive issue identified eons ago. I am afraid the solution is related to a possible change in the firewire drive (due to the chipset used on it) and/or using a different firewire card in your host computer.

Check here for one of the many posts on this in the past.

Yes it is an external drive. Gee, that's comforting to know:) I probably would change the drive to see if the problem goes away. However, I don't understand why it would work smoothly with another video editing software! I'm sure many of you guys had stalling problems before. I'd really appreciate if you could share with me how you dealt with it...such as tweaking software/hardware settings etc. Thanks.
