Video stutters after print to tape

joggernaut wrote on 12/30/2002, 7:59 AM
I captured, edited and rendered a 15 minute project - worked fine, quality is excelent.
Then - when i print to tape the video is stuttering on fast movements in the scene, just like a delay (or a mouse-shadow on laptops). This doesn't occur in all scenes, but always in the same parts of the film.

It's PAL-DV

usual changes have been made (no background tasks running etc.)

I would be grateful for any help.

computer config:

Windows XP home
Athlon XP 1600+ running at 1,4GHz
512MB RAM
2 HD's 5400 rmin, DMA enabled

Asus A7V266 MB with VIA KT266 chipset

Alltogether a very stable system with no crash's at all.

Hi joggernaut,

Please post your project properties, including advanced, they may reveal some issue(s).

You might try using the "resample" switch on the events that stutter to see if that helps.

As requested the project properties for my problem above:

PAL DV 25fps
size/aspect ratio: standard
lower field first
full res render qual: good
No motion blur
deinterlace method: blend fields

I hope you can help me...

Joggernaut,
Your computer is certainly faster than what I run but have you tried turning the video preview window OFF during your print to tape action? I'm not clear if you are running print to tape directly from the timeline or not. In my case turning off the video preview cleared up some print to tape problems for me. I have no experience with PAL, just throwing in my experience FWIW. Hopefully those with much more expertise will be able to help.
Very curious to hear your results.

i had the stutters a while back too
my fix was simple---i rendered at GOOD
i tried rendering at BEST--and it fixed it
maybe you should try BEST setting when rendering
good luck

Sonicboom,
Shouldn't it be BEST luck?
(Sorry, couldn't resist)

The first rendering I made was at best quality and was print to tape via Vegas Videocapture running solo and with no preview switched on. BTW, the camcorder I'm using is a Panasonic NV-DS28 and the tape is Panasonic too.

thanks for your suggestions so far.

I have the same type of problem but it doesn't appear at the same place in subsequent attempts to 'print to tape'. I have ben attempting to print from the timeline. Is there another way to 'print to tape' and how.? TIA

This might be obvious but make sure no programs are running in the background.
Ctrl/alt/ del and take a look.
Disable power management/ screen savers ect...

Hi Firefighter,

You might try rendering the whole program to dv avi, and using the PTT feature in Vegas Capture.

Tried this, had same problem. Also I had all other programs shut down etc.
Any other ideas?
At the fire department I use a Macrosystem Kron editor and do not have the problems that I knew people had with PC systems. But it was expensive amd getting more so. So for my home editor (which I have to pay for) I went with the VV (since I already had a pretty good computer). After reading lots of boards for several months and trying the demo of VV I was impressed with the options. But cannot get out to tape. While the Kron is somewhat more limited in options it is easier to use (which is a big point since I have to teach others to use it) And I have had no problems (or at least very minor ones). I have also tried to cut VCD discs with VV and they will not play on my DVD player evn though the literature for the player says that they will. But that is nother story.

Hope someone can come up with my print to tape solution.

All the past problems I had printing to tape were related to my firewire card. I went to the local computer store, bought a few different cards, and tried them out until I got a working system. I also discovered in the process that what works in one computer, doesn't always work in another. Experiment. You'll find the right combination.

Ok - problem solved, at least a mostly.

I switched on 'resample' and 'reduce interlace flicker' on all events in the timeline. I rendered a new file and printed it out - works okay but in some parts of the video there are still flickers appearing but thei'r not as strong as before. So at least I got a copy that you can show people.

Thanks for your help so far -
