VIDEO_TS to MPEG-2

Can anyone help me (in a laymans kind of way). I have video from a few cameras. The files on the DVD are Video_ts. A few questions:
1. The VIDEO_TS has to be converted to MPEG-2 to be used in Vegas?
2. What is the best way to do this?

I know this question seems really basic but trying to understand the simple logic and HOW to do it.

Vegas has a pretty simple way to import from a non-protected DVD.

File ---> Import ---> DVD Camcorder Disc

Just select the drive the disc you want to import video from is in, and Vegas will do the rest.

Ok, i have it importing right now. I have 2 Hard drives and i am making all of my destinationfolders on the 2nd drive (F:/ drive). Is this the wisest choice?

They imported sucessfully!!! These home movie clips were recorded on a high def camera, when i imported into Vegas will they still be HD?

Unfortunately not.
HD was lost when it got burned to DVD.

if it's an HD camcorder recording AVCHD to a DVD, ie; Sony UX1, then the video is still HD when you import it.

Not at all. Shooting HD and delivering SD is an extremely common practice, and shooting HD with a decent low end HD camcorder creates a downrezzed image equal to or better than many high-end SD camcorders.
But at the same time, a little knowledge in the transition from SD to HD is very useful.

This is what is taking place sooo it is safe for me to say i still have HD results? I am using a SonyHD recording AVCHD.

Do a search here on HD DVD, AVCHD or BluRay and you'll get a lot of informaton from folks doing hi def burning every day.

Shameless plug, you might want to read the "HDV: What You Need To Know" book, or read the HD Primer article found on the VASST site. It's sort of an introduction to HD, formats, codecs, etc.
