video vapture aspect ratio issue

I am just getting up and running (ok, crawling).

Have a Panasonc DVx100, footage shot in 16:9, but all my attempts to capture have the top and bottom black outs but the image is pudgy, horizontally stretched, vertically squished. Tried several settings in project prop and capture, including the automatic choose best etc with no success. (Pro 8.0).

Is this an issue due to 'simulated' wide screen recording by camera? any suggestions would be great. Only solution I have come up with is to manually crop (event by event) then change hight/width settings until looks OK, essentially coming out back as 4:3 or there abouts.

my camera has an override option for forcing 16:9 or 4:3 regardless of what's on tape.

could that be on?

Roger, there's a free White Paper titled "24p and Panasonic AG-DVX100 and AJ-SDX900" in the Downloads - White Papers section of this site (at the top of this page).
It goes through getting your camera to work properly with Vegas and I recommend it highly.
BTW, Vegas was the very first NLE to be able to natively handle 24p from the DVX-100.

Yes. The DVX100 can't shoot real 16:9 (unless you use an anamorphotic lense adapter).

Thanks very much for the feedback! I have been away last few days and will follow up now. Will post back once I have it resolved.
