VideoCapture.exe hangs on start up

I am a long time user of Movie Studio 12, but have a challenge in that I am trying to capture a few HDV tapes from my Sony HDR-HC3. It was tricky years ago and I think I had to use Adobe premiere to capture. My system still runs Win7. I just installed a trial version of MS17 in hopes that it will be able to grab the video that I need. It starts VegasCapture.exe and then hangs immediately with the grey screen of death. Same result with or without the camera connected. The system is 8-9 years old but was capable in it's time. There is good memory and disc space.

If there are updates that are needed or if this is a OS level issue or what. Any help will be gratefully accepted.

To be clear I am trying to import over iLink/Firewire as HDV1080i. Thanks

MS17 needs Win10. So not everything will run correctly on your Win7.

For many years I used the freeware WinDV to capture from DV cameras. For HDV there is the freeware HDVSplit, although I have not tried it, but people who have say it works fine for them, and it runs on Windows 7. The readme for HDVSplit says it supports Sony HDR-HC1, so maybe it will work for your HDR-HC3?

HDVSplit is working pretty well for me. It did require that I install some MPEG codecs from ffdshow, but that went smoothly. Hopefully the final capture from this old camcorder can be succesfully completed and then the camera and computer can be officially retired. The computer developed a problem a few years ago that causes it to crash hard. It took me a few months of wrestling with it to realize that if I laid it on it's side and propped it up 1.5" on one specific corner it could run for a day or even a week. It has been a great computer, but random crashes while trying to process video gets stale fast. Thanks for the help.
