VideoFactory 2.0c locks up computer on preview/capture

Once capture or preview is started, the digicam's image shows in the capture window, but after about six seconds of display (capture or preview, either one), the entire PC locks up solid.. ctrl-alt-del does nothing, and the machine can only be restarted by power switch toggle.

I have installed the newer Microsoft 1394 driver as suggested in another posting on this forum.

I've also reinstalled the VF2.0c application.

There is no other tasks running other than explorer and systray...

This is a fresh install of Win98SE, the PC is described as Soyo P4X400 M/B with 512mB RAM, 2.66Gh P4 processor, 80G drive, 71G free.

Both 1394 and imaging device appear to be correctly installed as shown on the System control panel applet hardware pane, and on the MultiMedia applet.

Additionally, I have run the vidcap25.exe program by itself, and the result is the exact same lockup after about 6 seconds of preview/capture (the tab is selected that has the current vidcam image showing).

Does Sony Tech Support, or another poster, happen to have any ideas as to why this application locks the computer up?

I have had this program for about a year, but have just now actually attempted to use it.

Thanks in advance for any help!

The best way to trouble-shoot is to break down the tasks into smaller parts so you can isolate the problem.

Download a trial of Scenalyzer from www.scenalyzer.com and use it to capture your video. If it works, you know the issue is with MovieStudio (aka VideoFactory). If it doesn't, you know the problem is between camcorder and computer. (By the way, are you capturing digital video, as in MiniDV or Digital8? Otherwise, we may be dealing with other issues.).

You may also want to check your Device Manager to make sure all is well there. (It's been awhile since I've worked with 98, but here's how you do it in XP.) Right-click on My Computer and choose Properties, then choose Hardware and/or Device Manager. With your camcorder plugged in, check under Imaging Devices and make sure your camcorder is listed. It it says something else (i.e., Texas Instruments), then you have an overwritten driver. Uninstall that driver and let Windows reinstall and see if it gives you the correct driver.

Do you have other or have you done capturing in another video editing program? Sometimes programs hijack the capture drivers and you have to steal them back by reinstalling VideoFactory.

Hope that gets your started.
