I didn't have in mind paying 599.00 to make primarily home movies I am working with. kind of hard to justify the cost.

ULead's Movie Factory is a popular choice for DVD authoring. I've only dabbled with it, but I was very pleased with the results.

I also use Ulead DVD MovieFactory 2. I've been very happy with it and its only $49 USD. I have Vegas4+DVD too, but I still use MovieFactory when I want to place several MPEG files on one DVD and have the option of playing them all sequentially. DVD Architect can’t do this! I find DVD MovieFactory is also great for VCD/SVCD and for VCD slide shows from my digital camera. It's free to try.

Just read through the forums and several of my concerns were answered - Thanks to everyone for helping each other out. You mentioned that you recommend Movie Factory for making DVD's. I haven't checked out the free demo, but was wondering if it offers as much as the video factory; such as the multi video & audio tracks, transitions/video FX's? I've seen some that are pretty basic.

VF and Movie Factory complement each other, though there is some overlap. VF is excellent for editing, but has no authoring tools, while Movie Factory is a very nice authoring program with some rudimentary editing tools.

Thanks for your response, the help is most appreciated. To make sure I understand what you are saying-I can create my movie in video factory and then use Movie Factory to make a DVD. If this is so, can you explain how it is done?

What you would do is edit your movie in Video Factory and output it as a DV AVI file. Then go to MovieFactory and import that AVI file and author the DVD. It will convert it to DVD quality MPEG2 for you during the DVD creation process.

Just to throw in my 2 cents:

DVD Complete is excellent. I've tried the others (sonic, movie factory) and for me, DVD Complete is easily better.

It has motion backgrounds, motion chapters windows, better looking templates, special features sections, overtures (start up video before the dvd menu).

Just a easier to work with, more professional looking package.

Yes, DVD Complete did impress me when I played with the demo. It does a nice job at the Hollywood style DVD's and I almost bought it. This was around the time Vegas+DVD came out so for $149 I upgraded to +DVD instead of spending $99 on DVD Complete because +DVD does AC3 encoding in addition to being a bit more flexible than DVD Complete because its not template driven. But I would recommend looking at DVD Complete too.

Thanks for the information. I have decided that I want a program that will burn DVD's, I just haven't decided which one yet.

Also thanks to the others that have followed this message, with suggestions of programs. I will look into each before purchasing one.

I also find that the mpeg2 plugin from mainconcept for about 30$ allows VF to also render the dvd - then move it to dvd auth program. Iam not pro sonic foundry at all but I must say mainconcept mpeg2 was a lot better than the other to I have used. It is also a lot nicer to keep track of your work if most of it is in one product.

Be carefull using DVD Complete. It looks nice, but its template based only and does not allow for a lot of customizing. You also cant add nested menus. Using something like Movie Factory 2 also does not allow nesting, but the better ones do. I use DVD Workshop, but at that price you could just buy Vegas + DVD. I also use Pinnacle Studio 8. Very nice menu creation for DVD's. I render to DV/AVI and import into Pinnacle and it does really nice job of encoding and burning to DVD. Also, in case your wondering why I am not using Pinnacle to edit my video, well, I use Video Factory for photo slideshows because of the pan/zoom and other video fx's that VF offers over other programs.
