Videos stretching when played on TV

JohnMickel wrote on 3/4/2006, 6:28 AM
All of my recent video’s first produced in Vegas then burned to a DVD are first rendered using main concept MPEG-2 and the Template format for DVD Architect 3 are stretching. I must show a logo in one more corners but they are lost or you see a little of them and starching also effects the overall appearance of the videos. I would appreciate any suggestion to help me resolve this problem

Thanks,
John

Are they being stretched out wider only, or higher only, or the whole image is just plain to big to see on the TV screen? If the later, you're experiencing overscan. Almost all TVs show the image larger than the opening in the front of the screen, for many various reasons. Search this forum for "overscan" for more information than you ever wanted to read.

When producing for TV playback you must keep overscan in mind and make sure anything important that needs to be seen is kept away from the edges of the screen. Staying away from the outer 10% is usually safe, but just to make sure you may want to avoid the outer 20%. The difficult part is that the actual amount will vary from one TV to the next and even within the same TV depending on it's age, how long it's been on, the voltage of the AC power, temperature, other magnetic devices in the area, the phase of the moon .... Well, maybe not the phase of the moon so much, but it may affect it just slightly.

Thank you for help and information. It appears that the whole image is stretching I will relocte the items that are going off of the screen.

I now realize that I have second part to my problem. I have photographs included that must show detail at the top and bottom of the photgraphs. How do I solve that, shrink them in Event Pan/Crop or is there a better way?

Thanks,
John

Vegas will show you the "safe area" boundary if you ask it to. In the preview window click on the "Overlays" button and select the area you want, "title" or "action". You can also customize size of the areas in the Preferences menu. If you have something you don't want to get lopped off by the TV then make sure you don't place it outside the safe area.

It really depends on how sure you want to be that most TVs won't lop off something you want displayed. The smaller rectangle is for "Titles" which implies you don't want any text missing and thus you have to be more conservative and keep things further away from the edge. The bigger one is for "action" which implies that if a little bit of the video image gets lopped off then it is no big deal.

The problem is you can't predict what will or won't be clipped; it depends on the particular TV. While putting things on the edge of the screen is visually satisfying, you are not likely to get consistent results, so you may have to settle for putting things close to the edge.
