Viewing project is NOT smooth

I'm having a hard time getting my project files to play smooth when I am creating it. the transitions are skippy or delayed and it makes it hard to time when I want some of my photos to open at a certain time of my song. I have read to illiminate any of the special effects like sharpening picture or bright contrast. Also something about "prerendering" Can I render my video as I go along vs waiting until I am finished with my project? When the DVD is created it has smooth playback.

My computer is a Dell studio xps 16 with 4 GB RAM 500GB hard drive dual processor so it should be able to handle video editing.

Thanks!

What type of files are you working with mostly? What version of Vegas?

1. Transitions will be slow, no matter the CPU speed. The rest of the video should be smooth though.
2. Make sure your project properties are set correctly (use the "match media" icon). If these are not correct, then Vegas will have to resize/resample and that takes CPU time.

You should try the following:
Open vegas
go to options menu and click on preferences
click on the video tab and optimize your maximum Dynamic RAM and rendering threads. This could help.

JPEG for photos MPEG 2 for video. Vegas 9 Platinum version.

I did this and right now the Dynamic RAM is set at 128 max available is 1024. The maximum rendering threads is set at 4. What would you change those numbers to?

Thanks!
