Vimeo audio sample rate.

I've noticed that videos uploaded to Vimeo.com seem to sound a lot better if the upload render has it's audio set to 44.1k instead of the regular video 48k. Is this because Vimeo does a lousy sample rate conversion or is Vimeo playing the audio back at 48k and Windows is doing the horrid sample rate conversion? That or am I just hearing things?

OK, I just figured out that it depends upon my audio interface. If I use my Line6 Toneport, I 48k sounds terrible. If I use my M-Audio Fast Track Ultra, either sample rate sounds really good. I think maybe it's time to put the Toneport on eBay (which is a shame because I really like the guitar effects).

Any idea of which sample rate is more common? I know the soundblasters all only do 48k, but Windows setup defaults to 44.1k so that is probably what more people have set.

Anyone have a recommendation of which sample rate sounds best for most end users?
