Does your system actually freeze and crash? When i get that message i click OK and the render continues without any problems.

Yes it does freeze and crash. as a matter of fact for the first 3 times I tried to restsart it it would go to the xp start screen and then just hang
I then shut down my other drives and then it would start.

I've been going thru the posts and read about changing the ram preview. currently I'm at 350 and and it says max available 383 mb Does that sound right? .I have a gig of ram.
I'm using a combination of swapable drives with usb 2 and Firewire as well as drives in removable trays. When I check the virtual memory it set to 768, the recomended size, with a maxime suze of 1536.
Any suggestion would be really helpful.
Thanks Again

The other thing that I haven't noticed before is that during render my cpu usage keeps spiking and dropping from 90% to 0% so that the usage history screen looks like a seies of m's' At the moment it sitting at 0% and just a flat line but the elapsed time and approximate time on the render box does keeo changing I'm rendering a 10 minute test clip that has taken 1 1/2 hours so far with 1 hour to go
The PF usage is now a flat line at 644 mb

Your "M"s in cpu usage are the disk swapping to virtual memory. cpu drops to wait for disk to finish.

Virtual Memory should be set to 1.5x hardware memory. bump that up.

Drop your Dynamic Ram Preview to 128, or 16 (in Vegas 5), or even 0, reboot, and try again.

I've just completed some extensive testing of Dynamic Ram (and threads in Vegas 6), and will be posting my results tonight. This should help for now.

.. check out your cooling system - yeah? Make sure your Power pack and vents for your pc are clear and clean. Have a look at your CPU cooling fins AND their fan. rendering? Mpeg2s? Large page file? Sounds awfully familiar to me ..
