VirtualDub Problem

I'm unable to open .avi's created in Vegas in VirtualDub. I get a message reading:

"couldn't locate decompressor for format dvsd, (unknown)" and there's an additional blurb about Virtualdub requiring a VFW codec, and that DirectShow codecs-such as used by windows media player, don't work.

The format I render to in Vegas is Video for Windows.avi, so why arent these things playing in Dub ? (BTW, uncompressed files do play)

Virtual Dub requires a VFW compatible DV codec, the one in Vegas is only available from within Vegas itself. You could go download the free Matrox codec pack, which includes a DV codec. Or you could go buy the MainConcept DV codec for about $50.

VirtualDub will open uncompressed AVI created in Vegas. That's generally using it backwards. Most start with some raw source file and pre process in VD.

Well, what's that VideoforWindows .avi thingy in the render-as window ? VDub won't open clips rendered to that setting. Are there "flavors" of VFW codecs ?
