Shortly after I posted my question about v6/7 compatability, I e-mailed Sony to ask about the free upgrade entitlement. I also e-mailed Amazon UK (because that's what it said I should do on the Sony website). Speedy response from Amazon saying (not entirely surprisingly) 'sorry we are unable to offer technical support on this product'. - they have yet to respond to my reply to that one.
A few hours later I got a reply from Sony saying 'no problem' and I would guess that the links for the upgrade were added to 'my software' within minutes of my e-mailing proof of purchase and serial numbers.
All in all, a little over 24 hours (most of which was a Sunday) to sort everything out and now I can read that file again.
Excellent service, and a good model for UK companies to follow (or perhaps the Sony support people don't have that much to do most of the time).
Time to get back to the movie making ....
