VMS 10: Low memory error while rendering

aquaholik wrote on 8/2/2010, 2:39 PM
I get "The system is low on memory. You may be able to reduce memory usage by closing other application."

My system spec is as follow:

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
AMD Phenom II X4 945 3.0 GHZ

Installed Physical Memory :8GB
Total Physical Memory: 7.75 GB
Available Physical Memory: 5.46 GB
Hard Drive is two 1Terrabytes SATA Seagates.

This is all from system information.

I am using VMS 10

The file that I am trying to render is a 720p 60frames/sec .MOV clips from a Kodak Playsport.

Now the funny thing is, I don't have a problem when rendering 1080p AVCHD files from my Canon Vixia HFS-10 and I shot it at 24Mbits/sec!!

When I try to render the 720P 60frames/sec .MOV clips from the Kodak Playsport, I get error no matter if I choose .avi, sony avc(.mp4), or windows media format (all with 720P rendered resolution)

But I was able to render 720P 30frames/sec .MOV clips from the same Kodak Playsport. The merged clips are about 10 minutes long in both case.

If I start Task Manager and watch the Performance Tab, memory usage never exceeds 3.5 GB and the available memory is always more than 4 GB. CPU usage is about 60%

I get the low memory error anywhere from 7% into the rendering or 35% into the rendering. It seems to be random.

Is it the .MOV files since it seems highly compressed and my older dual core laptop has a hard time playing it back.

Update: The second time I render, I restarted the computer and ran VMS 10 as administrator. I got the error at around 7%. I am rendering again now for the third time without a computer restart. It is reaching 50% now and seems to be progressing just fine. It is taking about 1 hours to render a 14 minutes collection of 720P 60frames/sec .MOV clips with barely any editing change beside a few trimmed clips.

I will update to see if it rendered successfully.

Update: it got to 62% and then VMS 10 report that is has stopped working and ask me to describe what I was doing before sending in an error report and then shuts down the program. This is annoying.

I just seems to get this random black clip during preview and in the rendered video as well as random freezes when adding too many clips to the timeline. This combine with the random low memory error and unknown errors are a little frustrating.

Downloaded Windows Live Movie Maker and quickly combined all the .MOV clips together in to about 5 minutes clip. Save movie as .wmv in 720p and then use VMS 10 to edit and render in the same .wmv. It went very smoothly. I then use dvdarchitect to make a few 720x480 widescreen dvd. All process went very smoothly in VMS10 after using Windows Live Movie Maker to combine and convert the .MOV clips to .wmv file. The conversion was fairly quick and shows very neglible loss in quality. I am impress with the way Windows Live Movie Maker handle .MOV files.

I am actually having this exact same problem when I render 720p video with Vegas Movie Studio HD 10. Does anyone know how we can solve this?

I tested zi8 footage (which "should" be the same as Playsport) in the VMS 10 trial, and had no such issues. My trial has expired, so sorry I can't be of further help.
It may be a Win7/64 issue.

If you upload clips somewhere, I can try it out.

Mark,

I tried using VMS 10 again to render 5 minutes of 720p 60frames/sec .MOV clips thinking VMS will handle the shorter .MOV clips without a problem. I render it as 720p ..wmv file. It render without the low memory error but I get random black clips in the finished .wmv files. My buddy has the same problem using VMS 10 and .MOV clips from the Kodak Playsports.

The random black clips ALSO appears in the preview window! But if I click on the timeline on the black clip area, it will then preview just fine. The problem is completely random and it has nothing to do with the problematic clip. If I fixed it during preview where I do not get random black clip, it also rendered fine without seeing the black clips. This occured during the 28 secs mark of the finished file which correspond to the third short clip(.mov clips). Even if I post the files for you to try, it will be totally random whether you will see a black clip during the preview or in the finished rendered file.

Right now I am content with the workaround using Windows Live Movie Maker to convert from .mov to .wmv. It render 720p .MOV files twice as fast as VMS 10 and without the random black clips. Also VMS 10 handled the converted 720p .wmv files without any jitter in the preview window.

I am just going to agree with other users which has bad experience with .mov files no matter which version of VMS they have used.

Mark, I did the CFFExplorer fix when I was running VMS9. It worked very well but my 1080p render was out of sync after 4 minutes.

I posted on a thread asking if CFFExplorer fix was needed for VMS 10 and didn't get an answer. I might try it anyway and see if it will fix the low memory error.

The CFFExplorer fix did not fixed the problem with the .mov files and random black clips from those .mov files but it SEEMS to fix the low memory error while rendering. Just rendered 4minutes of highly edited(transition, frame overlay, etc) 1080p 24Mbits/sec footage from my Canon Vixia HFS 10 to multiple 1080p format and it is rock solid. No crash, no low memory error.

Have you tried transcoding to avi? Since I began to transcode my clips I've yet to have a crash. My system is i7-920 6GB RAM W7 Pro. I've used the Pinnacle transcoder but the trial ran out ($70). Streamclip, which is free, is very slow. I'm testing out NeoScene from Cineform. Also there is a new plug in, Epic I, from DVFilm which claims all transcoding is done in the background.

Do a search for Eugenia. She has other solutions using free, available codecs. They work but are a little tedious to set up and use.

For short clips I edit the mov files but if I intend to add FX I'll transcode. All of my clips are from a T2i at full HD.

I am done with .mov files on VMS10. I am going to convert it before editing in VMS 10.

I have just spent three days trying to render a 6-min 720p-30 .wmv video from Casio Exlim EX-S12 12 Mp photos and 720p .avi videos. VMSP 10 was very flakey with frequent pauses and crashes during timeline creation, and about 50 attempts to render a 720p-30 .wmv video. DVD .mpg and .ac3 rendering was OK. I have a Dell i7 Win7-64.

I tried defragging my hard drive and various VMSP memory and thread settings, No help - crash or error low on memory. Back to the forum and I found the CFFExplorer fix. That fixed it for me. Renders are smooth as silk now. Thanks guys!

Glad to here the CFFExplorer fixed worked for you too. I am on day 7 of heavy use of VMS 10 mainly working with 1920x1080 clips from my Canon Vixia HFS 10. I have been leaving the machine on to render .m2ts files over night the last two nights. After the fix, I have not experienced any error or crash working on and rendering to .m2ts file. My render ratio for 1920x1080 16Mbs has been 7:1(11 hours for 1.5 hours video).

I also rendered the same files to .mpg, .wmv (in 1080 and 720p) and .mp4 without a problem. That along with tsMuxer, the .m2ts files I rendered have been flawless. I am now awaiting the arrival of my blue ray burner.

We need more users who are experiencing problem with rendering to apply the fix to make sure that the CFFExplorer fix for VMS 10 really works and not just a placebo.
