It may be your PC.

What operating system are you using? 32-bit or 64-bit? Have you manually gone to Windows Update to ensure you have even the non-critical updates? Do you have the latest version of Quicktime?

Have you got 20-30 gigs of free, defragment space on your C drive? When did you last clear off your spyware and tmp files?

Are you editing on your C drive or to an external or second hard drive?

What type of camcorder is your video coming from?

Sorry for not replying and saying thank you but my problem went a lot deeper and I had to format hd and reinstall. Everything seems to be working OK now - fingers crossed.
