VMS 9.0b Platinum hangs during Make Movie

Hey everyone,

I'm having some issues with my Make Movie locking up. Has anyone seen similar issues with VMS 9.0b Platinum hanging/locking up during Make Movie rendering? I'm seeing this consistently for my project and I'm not sure how to proceed. During rendering, it hangs at 42% and never recovers. The frame counter and percent indicator stops moving but the time indicator still rolls. I haven't seen any issues with it locking up during Editing yet.

Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thank you!

My specs:
DELL XPS M1530 notebook
P4 2.4Ghz Dual Core 2 with 4GB RAM
Nvidia 8600M GT Mobile 256M video
Windows Vista SP1 Business
Canon HV30 (24P Cine Mode)

Sony VMS 9.0b (Build 92)
Magic Bullet Looks 1.1
.m2t files captured using VMS Capture
24P pulldown removed using TMPGEng 4.0 Express (4.6.2.266)

Render settings (primary audience is Vimeo HD so I'm using .WMV):
Audio: CBR, 128kbps, 44Hz
Video: Bit Rate VBR Peak, High Definition (1280x720), 23.97 FPS, Bit Rates 5M - 8M

You need to go exactly at that clip at 42% and find what's wrong in there. Maybe a plugin makes it crash. You might need to redo that clip.

As for Vegas 9, it has better support for .m2t files, yes. But if this is a third party plugin crashing, then the bug might still exist there.

Eugenia,

Thanks much for your prompt response.

I took some additional troubleshooting steps and it looks like it may be the Magic Bullet looks plug-in. I'm using the trial version from Red Giant's website since I want to ensure it works before I buy it and they told me that VMS compatibility is not guaranteed. Does the full version of Sony Vegas operate more smoothly? If yes, I may just upgrade so my editing is smoother.

Speaking of smooth operation, I've noticed that my VMS is now crashing when my editing. It usually does this when I'm stepping through the timeline using my arrow keys (left and right arrow). I wonder if it's related.

You don't tell us which format you are editing with. You removed pulldown, and so it's not HDV anymore. What format is it?

Eugenia,

Based on the .m2t file properties post pulldown, Vegas lists them as MPEG-2, 1440x1080x12, Field order (None), Pixel aspect ratio (1.33 HDV 1080).
Let me know if this is not what you wanted to know. Some of this HDV stuff is quite new to me.

How many fps is that file? What does the properties say? You see, HDV .m2t is not 24fps, it's always 60i. Custom mpeg2 exports can be 24p, but not the consumer HDV format itself.

I recorded in 24P and had to do the pulldown removal using TMPGEng. Doesn't TMPGEnc set it up as a consumer HDV format when I use the instructions from the HV20 forum?

http://hv20.com/showthread.php?t=1417

My TMPGEng export settings are:
MPEG-2 video , 1440x1080, 23.976 fps, CBR (constant bitrate), 25000 kb/s

Am I missing another step after the pulldown to ready the .m2t for editing?

Ok, so it's ok then, if you made it into editing, I guess is fine.

So, you need to go to that 42% place in the timeline that it hangs, see what's special about it, and remove it and redo that part.

Also, exporting back in .m2t from your utility you lose a lot of quality because HDV is really losing lots of quality every re-export. If you want to not lose quality you need to install a lossless codec and export via your utility's custom AVI mode.
