vms failure during rendering

Every time I attempt to render I get a windows error message telling me that moviestudio has encountered a problem and has to close, sometimes it also crashes and I get one of two crash analysis notices, either "fault caused by device driver" or the other one lately has been "thread caught in graphics driver". The first project I tried was a picture slideshow with jpegs and mp3 audio. the other one is 3 mpeg2 video clips. When i try to render anything at the moment movie studio just dies. I have xp service pack two fully updated. I have been to the ati website and downloaded the latest driver for my radeon 9800 pro. When I start rendering I disconnect from the internet and shut down avg and zonealarm and don't do anything else. I am sure I have enough hardware to run VMS as I have completed one project previously but just now I cannot get it to work at all and am getting really fed up. I am trying to ouput to MPEG in the DVD architect default. I suspect a problem with the interaction between the main concept mpeg decoder and my graphics card but I have no idea how to resolve it if I have the latest graphics card driver from the manufacturers website. Please can somebody tell me what I am doing wrong??

Hmm...

Do you have the latest update to VMS? (You might want to completely uninstall what you have and install just this update, which acts as the full version—keep your serial key handy.)

Also try reducing or turning off video acceleration to see if that helps any. (Right-click a clear area of your Windows desktop and select "Properties," then the "Settings" tab, "Advanced" button, and finally the "Troubleshoot" tab.)

mD, thanks for the response, I'm sure I do have the latest version of vms, 4.0a build 48, I have also switched off graphics accelaration. I have reinstalled vms so many times that I had to contact sony who said I had too many activations. I have reinstalled windows with a limited number of programs as well to try and get it to work but none of this seems to work. I am really struggling.

I've been looking through the forum questions lately and I can't see any reference to anyone having problems rendering. Am I the only one? I don't understand why, my system should be capable but it doesn't want to render. Desperately begging for assistance

Davey, do your machine have installed a dedicated HDD for capturing your footage? Or you are using only one? If you only have one HDD for both the OS and VMS that might be the reason. Rendering will use most of the processor and memory and Windows will compete for that. Also, you can Defragment your HDD.

Bigjoe,
Yes I do have two hard disks, I have previously captured my video to the second drive and only have vms and windows on the other drive. I have also just completed a fresh install of windows.

Try doing a dust bunny patrol. Rendering is very CPU intensive, and as such will cause the CPU to become hotter than normal. If the CPU cooling is marginal, then rendering can push things over the edge.

Open up the case and with some canned air, blow dust off the CPU heat sink as well as the fan; blow the dust off any other areas of the motherboard as well and the power supply.

Also, while most motherboards these days have a sensor to verify that the CPU heat sink fan is functional, if you've an older MB it's probably worth visually checking that your fan is in fact working.

Scott,

Thanks for the response, I have confirmed that the mother board heat sink is bunny free and the fan is working. During the last failed attempt to render I did manage to copy the error file details that were generated by VMS. This included the detail, "access violation in module mcmpgdec.DLL. I know this is related to the vegas codec however I do not know how to correct it.
