VMS HD Platinum 10 Unusable

kfctombraider wrote on 6/29/2010, 5:59 PM
Just "upgraded" from VMS 8.0 and it won't even function right now. If I add media and try to preview it, it will either run for a second or too then freeze, start again then freeze, or the whole program freezes and I have to kill it with task manager. This is with one flip created .avi file of about 11mb. There's also no audio either. If I drag the media file to the timeline the program freezes completely and I have to kill it with task manager. Same thing for creative vado hd files. I do notice that the "building peaks process" is taking an extremely long time just for one .avi file, cpu usage is only at about 22% in task manager. Project properties set to NTSC DV 720 x 480 default settings. In comparision VMS 8.0 "building peaks" is almost instaneous with the exact same Vado or Flip file when importing media, previews perfectly, with preview set to (Auto) and has sound as well. I can drop it into the timeline and preview with no lag, fades, etc. with no problems.

I did have to install the codec ffdshow to get my Vado HD files to work with version 8.0 (no sound) will that have an effect on performance?

Am I missing some settings here or is this version that bad, slow, buggy, unresponsive? I want to edit both my HD camcorder, Flip, and Vado HD files with one program, is this not the solution?

Tks for your input.

Is the Vado HD recording in MJPEG AVI rather than h.264 AVI? IF yes, then I've seen this bug with Platinum 10 too. Versions 8 and 9 work faster than real time with 720p MJPEG AVI (via ffdshow), while 10 take ~5 seconds per frame. Might be the same problem for h.264 AVI... I guess they're having a bug..

The problem I have is that it goes to the Initializing UI and it just stays there. I have a trial and I thought something was wrong so I bought it thinking the trial had something missing...but this does the same thing. Any kind of help appreciated.

Got a reply from support, but are you freakin kiddin me?? Version 8 will work with these files but the latest won't?

"Hi mark,

Thank you for contacting Sony Creative Software.

Taking a look at that file, it appears to be encoded with the Xvid codec. This is not a supported codec in Vegas Platinum 10. Please take a look at the following knowledge base article for a work around:

If you still have a follow-up question on this particular incident, please feel free to update it. If you have a completely different question, please create a new incident."

The link takes you to this article which again tells you it doesn't support DivX or Xvid files which links you to MediaInfo which tells me my Flip file video and audio stream are this:

"DivX or Xvid file support
Question

Will your Sony Creative Software program support DivX or Xvid files?
Answer

The first step would be to see if you truly have a DivX or Xvid. You can use this free utility to detect the file format.

If you have determined that the file is DivX or Xvid, be aware that Sony Creative Software does not officially support any version of these codecs. At this point, we would suggest that you find a way to save the DivX or Xvid file to some other supported format, then open it in the Sony Creative Software program."

So did I just blow $50 for nothing? Anyone have any advice on converting the Flip xvid to something Vegas can use, which still seems absolutely ludicrous to me.

Thanks much everyone for your input. Using these converters like the AVS video convert, which format/output should I use to keep the original quality or the best quality compared to the original that i can? Not up to date on all of the formats I'm afraid.
