VMS Plat 7 Problem Starting

I purchased a new computer and have re-downloaded my VMS and DVDA from the Sony site. Everything goes fine with the download and registration process but when I try to open the software, I get a message that says VMS has encounterd an unknown problem. Sometime VMS will still work for a while, but other times it will hang and I have to force the program to stop.

As usual, I have deadlines for 3 seperate videos and really don't have time for problems. VMS has never given me trouble before on my old computer. The new computer is a Dell Precision T3400 running under XP with more than enough memory, etc to handle VMS.

Does anyone have any ideas? I have already tried removing and reinstalling the software.

Download the latest .NET from Microsoft, v3.5, and make sure you also have Quicktime/iTunes installed too. Then, report back. Also, try to re-install Vegas.

Well I'm not entirely positive what I did but it appears to be working normally now. I did do a check for Microsoft updates and made a few minor adjustments. I had already tried reinstalling VMS before my original post. Bottom line is, it seems to be working fine.

Thanks Eugenia for your help. I'm still not clear on exactly what the .NET v3.5 is or does, but there are a lot of things about computers that I don't understand. Anyway, thanks again.

I spoke too soon. Although it appeared to work normally 2 days ago, tonight I got the same error message and crashing problem.

This time I did a little more detective work and came across a Knowledgebase response that fit the bill perfectly. The error message was "An error occured starting VMS. the reason for the error could not be determined."

I found this exact phrase in the Tech support section and found out I needed to change the control panel setting for Terminal Services.

Once I made this change, it seems like everything is back to normal.
