VMS -vs- Vegas 7, should I upgrade

I am currently using VMS 4.0 and I would like to start working on more serious/involved projects and (since I am not a fan of Vista...yet) am wondering if I should go with VMS 8 or Vegas 7 since I plan to keep my Xp system for at least another 12-18 months. With the Vista supported versions of VMS and Vegas coming out, prices on the last XP supported versions are becoming quite attractive. Also, I realize that the push is on to switch to HD, but since the work I am doing is not "income producing" will I be ok staying with non-HD format for the next 12-18 months as well. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Vegas Pro 8 will be out in another week or so. Although Vegas 7 was great to start with, there have been some pretty serious advancements in 8.

If you want more power then I would forget about both VMS and V7 and go straight for V8. It's pretty much the same interface as VMS so you will be able to start almost where you left off in vms.... but there is a LOT more to it... you WILL NOT regret the move!!

VMS 4 is pretty old and VMS 8 is pretty robust. Unless there is a compelling reason to move to the more expensive Vegas Pro (i.e., there is a feature that you can't live without), I would stay with VMS. It is by far the best bang-for-the-buck. IMHO, the $29.95 upgrade price will be the best money you ever spent.

I have Vegas (Pro :) 6 and probably will have to upgrade to 8, but it's expensive (prices haven't been set in stone, but it's around $700 for full and $400 upgrade -- MSRP). I'm still sticking to XP for a while too. I'd prefer my system resources go to editing than bloated OS :)

So I second JohnnyRoy's p.o.v. on this. Consider your budget and what you actually need.

AND as an alternative and quite honorable upgrade step, you could also....

Go get Vegas 6 from B&H Photo for only $99 (how long this deal will last considering 8 is coming out very soon, I don't know, so go check it out).

Having unlimited tracks and most likely far better rendering engine alone is worth it!

B&H is one of the most reputable retails around, so even though you'd get only the disk (no packaging, etc), it's the real deal -- they are one of Sony's steadiest outlets.

That's how I jumped in and got a free upgrade to 7 months ago
but I bought dvd3 from a user here who had upgraded to 4

Depending on how important DVD authoring is for you -- immediately to longer term, that part can be dealt with in various ways (be it through Sony's DVD Architect or any other number of shareware to freeware solutions).

IMO, the biggest advantage of this deal is getting the core thing you need
