VMS10 and avchd: same old issues

I was so hopeful that VMS10 would have dealt with some major memory issues of the past, but it didn't...
A somewhat longer and complex project project (6'40'') with the T2i mov files, when rendered with the Sony AVC mp4 codec would crash at 17%. Using the wmv codec, it would crash instantly. (a low on memory warning + crash)
The only quick solution I saw was to dig up Mpeg Streamclip and convert the files (thanks to Eugenia's tutorial), point Vegas to those files and render with those files. The project rendered, thanks to Cuda, in 16'.

My system has 3GB ram and a Q6600 intel cpu, nvidia GT8800 gpu.

I think MOV files have always been a problem with Vegas and I doubt this will change. My guess is Sony doesn't want to pay Apple any fees for codec code.

What I do is simply suck all the MOV files into Windows Moviemaker, click "Make Movie" and then use the resulting WMV file in Vegas. Vegas's great editing functionality makes it easy enough to edit the single WMV file - and probably easier than editing the multiple files that created it.

Use the MainConcept encoder. I thought it's freed in VMS10.

The mainconcept encoder only comes in 320 an 480 resolutions (for iPod) in VMS10 HD.

Yeah the MC mp4/AVC encoder can now be customized to a wide variety of resolutions, frame rates, and bit rates. The ipod compatible pull down selections are just templates.

Thank you, big daddy. I hadn't realised. Initial testing seems promising. I'll soon find out if the original mov files work with this codec.

Same problem. Also with the mainconcept codec, my complex and longer project crashes instantly.

From what I have found, the apple quicktime codec on windows can be problematic and is the likely source of your problems. There can be a lot of reasons for the mov problem with VMS and they are likely non trivial to solve. In the meantime, looks like you will have to use a workaround to process the mov files in your project.
