For those wondering about vms11, well I've just compared against vms10 the mainconcept h264/aac encoding, interesting to note that the new vms11 has a version 11 of the plugin whilst my vms10 has a presumably very much older version 1.0, suggesting there may be quite a lot of improvement? Anyway back to my comparison; in vms10 a 35 minute video originally an m2t file (from my hdr-fx7e) with lots of added text and music and commentary took nearly twice as long as with the new vms11, 44mins to be precise in vms11. My settings were video, 640x360, frame rate 15, progressive, par 1, 2 ref frames, vbr av 2mb/s max 4mb/s, 2 pass, audio, sample rate 44,100hz, bit rate 96,000 b/s. All on a Dell Inspiron 580 (i3 processor, windows 7) However the file size has gone up dramatically >535Mb!
Incidentally I note that the sony equivalent encoder is also now version 11 and suprisingly both build 220, maybe a bit suspicious? Those also contemplating a new pc may also want to try for the new Sandy Bridge Intel processors as they have a dedicated h264 part built into the processor, allegedly making it a lot quicker again.
