VMS8p Problems/questions

i am having problems with my VMSp8.

1. editing on the timeline and previewing seem alot slower and less responsive than i think they should be on my computer.
i have a 2,5gh dual core cpu 512 3dfx card and 3g ram. i also have a dedicated 500gb hd solely for video files.
i use a hdr-sr7e for filming but both SD and HDV files are sketchy at best to edit.

2. when checking the dynamic ram it says i only have 1gb to use, is that normal?

any suggestions or advice would be appriciated.

1. Select Project Properties and make absolutely sure that you have the right template selected.

2. Yeah, sounds about right.

i use the pal dv template and save in avi. if i try any other format when i save it all i get is sound and no image.

The PAL DV template is *not* the right template for your footage. You need the HDV 1080/50i template.

And what do you mean "apple boards"? Please tell me you don't run Windows via emulation.

no i use normal windows but quicktime doesnt seem to work well on my computer.
if i use the hd templates the preview skips even more frequently. additionally when i render it to my hard drive and try to play it through wmp or similar all i get is audio. i probly need additional codecs.
i usually record in sd then save it as a pal dv avi although the image quality suffers quite alot. any other format i seem to use only has audio.
i appriciate any advice you could give.

If you record in SD, then use the PAL DV template as you use. But if you record in HD, then you need to use the HDV template. Skipping is normal, HD requires a really fast PC.

As for not being able to view the video on WMP, yes, you need codecs. Download ffdshow and while installing it check the mpeg2/avi checkboxes to let ffdshow handle these filetypes for WMP: http://downloads.sourceforge.net/ffdshow-tryout/ffdshow_rev1805_20080122_clsid.exe
Also, download these and playback your files through the MPC app instead of WMP:

When I working on video editing I tend fire up the Services control panel (from Administrative Tools) and stop non-essential (usually non-Microsoft/Windows) background services that I won't be using during that time. Examples of such services might be: Bluetooth, iPod, printer management, SQL server, VPN, cell phone sync service, etc. All these services running in the background use memory and sometimes steal CPU cycles.

Virus checkers may also interrupt your work. You may want to configure them to ignore certain types of files and perhaps exclude SVMS folders/binaries from checking if you feel confident doing that.
