VMSP9 Crash AGAIN

retdon wrote on 1/28/2009, 4:44 AM
I am having terrible trouble with the operation of this version. The first time this was happening I thought it was my new PC, which has all the power, ram, etc. in the world to do video editing. I even went so far to have the HD cleaned and Vista reinstalled, after everyone (Sony and Dell) had deleted, reinstalled, and fiddle with all kind of files trying to get it to work.

Sony kept telling me it probably was not a "clean install" and even had me into the registry files. Dell mess with files and still it crashed.

Now I am working on another project and here come the crashes and nothing has been done to any files by anyone. When The Geek Squad cleaned the HD they told me any other problems and it is the software, they are right.

I have used SMS for years and keep upgrading but this one is awful. Been reading other product reviews, Pinnicle and Adobe and found that they crash also.

How can this be prevented, I have 4G RAM pleanty of power and HD, can someone explain what is happening????????

A few more details regarding what type of footage (video/format. stills), video or other FX you are using would help.

Also, what are the computer specs?

Mark,
Still having problems, I have a 4Gz quad core, 4Gb mem, 650Gb HD Dell built for my video editing, not a cheap computer. Since my latest problems sony is again telling me to go into the registry, I WILL NOT DO THAT. Below is the latest error message, what do you think.

I am thinking of buying a program called windowsrepairkit.com, says it will repair corrupt files?????
I have also downloaded a trial of Pinnacle 12 and it is running great, giving it a try before I totally give up on SVMS 9.0b. The trial is not as complex as VMS so I will probably buy the Ultra program with more bells and whistles.

I don't know what to do, I don't want to give up on VMS but I don't see any other choice, I don;t have anyone to help me figure this out and Sony tech support is a waste.................. Linda

Perhaps a "last ditch" attempt to fix your problem may be to install Windows XP as a second operating system You would get the option at start-up to run Vista for your normal operation and use XP when running a video editing session.
I have Win XP Home Edition SP 3 installed on a PC with a fair bit less power than yours and have virtually no problems with VMS Plat 9B.
If you still have the Windows disk from your previous PC it would be relatively straight forward to install it as a second OS.
Hope this helps.

So you'd rather spend money on a third party program that might possibly have more side-effects that you would ever know rather than follow directions to clean the registry for the Sony application? What Sony is asking you to do is not that sinister...if you're unsure, get the complete instructions and look at all the registry keys before you modify them. A clean install involves deleting only Sony/SCS/Sonic Foundry keys, nothing else.

If you install/run a 3rd party registry cleaner, you risk rendering other applications inoperable. I would never recommend that to anyone.

I agree with Himanshu. I would listen to Sony Support (again).

Furthermore, I won't go into details here, but just make sure that you are happy with the other software you are considering. Reading this forum will show you that there are many converts doing exactly the opposite of what you are considering.

I would also be quite cautious of programs that can "repair corrupt files". Cleaning a registry? Sure. Repair? Hmmm....

Thanks for the comments,

I did not get the repair program after all. This is the 3rd or more time that Sony has told me to do this. The first time I did it and it really messed up my PC, so bad I had to have the HD wiped clean and everything reinstalled. I was told then if I had any more problems it was the software and not my PC.

I had a clean installation when the HD was wiped, what happened to it since? How do keep it from happening? BUT my BIGGEST QUESTION why did V8 run so well in XP.

I never knew you could have 2 operating systems!!!!! How do you go between the two?

Does anyone know if all the home video editing programs "share" files with Windows as Sony has told me SVMS does. Sony says this is where the problem is, why can't they fix it. I still believe there is a compatability issue between Vista and SVMS 9.0b..........
Himanshu wrote on 2/19/2009, 10:58 PM
It's too bad you had to reinstall your operating system the first time around. However, the clean uninstall instructions are posted here, and aren't that complicated. As a first step I would ignore the part about changing MSCONFIG settings if your intention is to just clean the registry.

I'd suggest uninstall the app & clean the registry of those entries, & reinstall. Then try again, and report your findings back to SCS support. They will surely investigate further.

If you keep trying new things (new OS, dual-boot OS, reg cleaners) you will never get to the bottom of the real problem.
