vob-avi conversion /virtual dub help

Hi,
I am trying to edit some vob files and seeing that editing vob/mpeg 2 files is a nightmare i have decided to go down the conversion route into avi.
Vegas is very slow in converting the vob files into avi so i took your advice in using virtual dub-mpeg2 software which seems to do a very fast job, but i have 2 questions to ask please:
1) which compression method is best to use.? I have experimented with a few and found that the Panasonic dv codec works the best, meaning that the playback of the converted vob files into avi in vegas 5 is the smoothest, but i am open to more suggestions please.

2) As my vob files are widescreen , when i convert them into avi with virtual dub-mpeg2, the files are not widescreen anymore. How can i convert into avi and still retain the widescreen format please?

As i mentioned above, i found vegas to be slow in converting the vobs to avi, but if anyone can help me with more suggestions of other software or settings in vrtual dub-mpeg2 to retain the widescreen format i would be very glad to hear from you.
Many thanks for support to all

1. fiine , use panasonic .. mainconcept dv is another choice for vdub

2. import the avi 's into vegas and in properties on each clip , select widescreen (they are anamorphic widescreen)
