Sure, use FlaskMpeg, or DVD2avi, (both freeware). Get them at
http://www.doom9.org.

does anybody know if it is possibile with those tools to editing vob files? I mean, to take a vob and delete some scenes, join another vob and so on... but without loose in quality, so without decompress, and recompress... just throwing away part of the stream or merging the streams coming from different vobs. Is this possible? does exist any tool that can do this?

Not sure exactly what you are asking. You might check out Vobedit, or ChopperXp. Again, you might want to visit Http://www.doom9.org, or http://www.dvdrhelp.com and search their forums.

I did it using Vegas 4.
Copied the VOB files to the HDD added a .mpg file extention (xxx.vob.mpg) then loaded them into Vegas, added and deleted stuff. Worked well (Not perfect as the joins between the each file).
In my case I then rendered it back to a Mpeg (no visiable loss and fast) then using DVD-A back to the DVD.
It worked remarkable well!

Guys am I missing something here...if we can get the vob files of a origional video dvd and converted them into avi, what is stopping us from copying them.

Does this mean we can copy origional dvd's? I know the media is normally 8gb, but couldn't we reduce the bit rate and make them fit on a 4.7gb disk?

Obviously we'll lose menu's etc, but we'll have the main film..

I might be talking cr@p...just a thought.

Most commercial DVDs are encrypted...though it can be broken. There are now a bunch of programs that do just what you describe.

With MY understanding, if a VOB files extension is changed to MPG, then edited within VEGAS, the resulting render will be of lower quality. It is of lower quality because an MPG file is being recompressed to a MPG file again.

Am I right in this?

Can someone please clarify?

thanks

THanks all of you for the answers. I will try as soon as possible by renaming the vob files as mpeg. I am dealing with DVD made by myself and so I haven't got any problem related to decrypting the VOBS. However I agree with "clearvu"... the result by using Vegas will be of lower quality (the file will be recompressed). I was instead thinking to some tool like TMPGEnc: it gives you the possibility to cut an mpg file or to join two mpg files without reencoding, just copying the original streams into a new file. Unfortunately, the utility in TMPGEnc does not read VOB files, but I will try to rename them as mpg.
VOBedit seems not able to do this (maybe I am wrong! please tell me if it is so). As opposite I think that after editing VOB files it is necessary to use something like IFOEdit to adjust all the information about the VOBs into the DVD.... perhaps the problem is not so easy!

look in dvdhelp.com in the section TOOLS/Rip. You can find different tools, I don't know which one is better I just made a trial once with CladDVD and it worked out fine. I read also something good about DVDxcopy or something like this.
