VOB length trimmed after import

Hi folks,

I'm hoping that somebody can clear up something that is frustrating the heck out of this neophyte.

Symptom:
VOB files of any length (1 to 15 minutes tested so far) are trimmed so that only the first five to six seconds appear in the timeline when the clip is dragged from the project media area.

Other Info:
The VOB files cam from my video camera after I finalized the disk. I tried importing directly from the camera within Vegas and couldn't manage to get it to recognize the camera was connected. I also tried the trick of renaming the extension from VOB to mpg without any luck.

I have lots of home video VOB files and Adobe Premeire Elements can handle them without the above symptom, but I really want to learn Vegas.

Any ideas?

Thanks!!!

Gerry

So I assume from what I read you've tried "Import from camcorder disc" in VMS with no luck, as well as no luck dragging and dropping onto the timeline or selecting VOB's from the media bin.

One other option is to pull the video into Premiere LE, export as avi, then import that into VMS. If I recall correctly, I've managed to make that work in the past.

Possibly Eugenia, Chienworks or one of the other level 5 wizards will have some advice on a particular codec or something to solve your problem. But on the whole I've found that VMS (I use version 6) is "buggy" when it comes to working with VOB's.

Dear Mick,

Your assumption was incorrect. I had only tried to import straight from the camera. When I tried importing from the camcorder disk as you wrote it worked!!!

Thanks!

It looks like I'm good to go moving forward with regard to my video camera, however I have all my old video files that exhibit the original problem. When I originally saved these files I kept only the VOB's and dumped the IFO and BUP files, which I suppose was a mistake as these files must have some purpose.

I would really like to get up to speed with video editing technology. Does anybody have any books or articles to recommend?
