Please suggest ways to convert personal VBO or VRO files to compressed AVI with minimum loss of quality.

Right now I can convert them to MPEG-2 but the sound is in AC-3 format which Vegas cannot import in the current version. Also, the way the current version of Vegas handles MPEG-2 clips on the timeline is poor at best.
